Finally a balanced opinion from one of the biggest Trump Bashers on the net. I won’t be holding my breath waiting for the next one however…
Some would describe the subreddit of only about 1,500 people as a satirical place where tankies and extreme lefitsts could hyperbolically express their frustrations against “reactionary” politics. But others found their calls for looting gulags, and to “kill whitey” distasteful. Reddit’s reasoning for banning the community was vague, saying they violated the site’s content policy.
From a Reddit spokesperson:
Reddit is the proud home to some of the most authentic conversations online. We strive to be a welcoming, open platform for all by trusting our users to maintain an environment that cultivates genuine conversation and adheres to our content policy.
We are very clear in our site terms of service about content that can get users or communities banned from Reddit. We have banned r/LeftWithSharpEdge due to repeated violations of the terms of our content policy.
Odds are the group’s tongue in cheek calls for violence against police and white people is what got them the boot. Or it is also speculated their users were harassing other Redditors.
Other far leftists groups were angered with Reddit’s banning. /r/FullCommunism called for revolt, whatever that means. Its users pointed to Reddit’s double standard of allowing subs with blatant hate speech like /r/altright while banning LeftWithSharpEdge, which only employs ironic hate speech.
Ironically LeftWithSharpEdge was featured as subreddit of the day the same day it was booted off the site.
Right wing Redditors may be pleased to see evidence that Reddit is somewhat consistently applying their rules and not just targeting the right, but those who want to see Reddit as a haven for free speech will no doubt be concerned by the admins’ increasing use of the ban hammer.
