TIME – President-elect Donald Trump has perfected the art of political misdirection. Under fire for delaying an announcement of how he’d handle his business affairs while in the White House and facing questions about his ties to Russia, Trump took a meeting Tuesday morning with rapper Kanye West, which swiftly buried the other coverage. Trump has done this before, by talking up flag burning or the price of a new Air Force One, and it reveals how his skills as a showman help him avoid scrutiny from the press and the public.
Kanye West took to Twitter to share details of his meeting with President-elect Donald Trump.
The rapper set off a media frenzy when he arrived at Trump Tower Tuesday morning after recently spending nine days in the hospital after a reported mental breakdown.
“I wanted to meet with Trump today to discuss multicultural issues,” West shared on Twitter. “These issues included bullying, supporting teachers, modernizing curriculum, and violence in Chicago.” The “Famous” singer added he feels “it is important to have a direct line of communication with our future President if we truly want change.”
West, who has previously said he plans to run for president in 2020, also tweeted “#2024” which many took to mean he has postponed his presidential run.
I think we’ll know more about what Trump and Kanye really have planned in the next few months, but I like Kanye to act as a liaison or ambassador with the black community, of which Donald Trump only received 8% of the popular vote. I think this is a savvy move by Trump, which could also be incredibly beneficial for everyone involved.
